CAPS KICK START WITH A BANG !!
October 1st, 2009 | by Scott Madore |
The Washington Capitals wasted no time in getting into high gear to kick-off the 2009/10 season.
In their season opener, Washington owned last season’s Eastern Conference champion Boston Bruins. Goaltender Jose Theodore allowed just one goal on 20 shots against. Conversely, the Caps got four goals past Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas on 34 shots. Brooks Laich and Alexander Ovechkin combined for ten shots of those shots, taking five a piece and scoring two goals each in the game.
It was certainly a sweet victory for the Capitals. The defeat of the only team in the Eastern Conference superior to them last year will do that to you.
Backstrom’s 3-assists in the Caps season debut, should be a sign of things to come. Look for him to challenge the likes of Crosby, Thornton & Malkin for the assist title this year.
It was also a positive sign to see scoring depth. Particularly in the form of third line centreman Brooks Laich’s 2-goal night.
Ovechkin’s 2-goal debut was also a nice start. Surely a sign of many more positive things to come…
